Taming AI

Hello from the FT newsroom. Global leaders in politics, technology and business have gathered at the UK’s Bletchley Park for the inaugural AI Safety Summit this week. The gathering comes at a critical moment: we are on the brink of a novel implementation of AI that will knit itself even more closely into our lives. Will it transform how we communicate?

At Bletchley Park, factions are emerging, the FT has revealed. Warning of an “existential risk to humanity” in the coming decades, Chinese AI scientists have called for controls on the technology that are more stringent than what the UK, EU and US have proposed. Despite the discord, attendees have penned a global commitment to collaborate on safety, dubbed the “Bletchley Declaration”.
