0.ENOPRESS WINE SPECIAL

IRISSE MONTECUCCO VERMENTINO DOC 2021

Uvaggio: 85% Vermentino, 15% Grechetto. Un vino biologico da vigne di 20 anni situate a circa 300 metri di altitudine da suoli in prevalenza sabbiosi. Dopo un periodo di riposo in bottiglia, il vino è pronto.

 ENGLISH VERSION

At the foot of Mount Amiata, almost in the shadow of the Montalcino colossus, there is a DOC that is not well known to the general public and which you cannot easily find on the menus of restaurants or wine shops: Montecucco. Surrounded by the harshness of the Maremma nature, which has nothing to do with the rolling hills of the Val D'Orcia, austere and almost hidden, it is a truly recent denomination, established in 1998, by 18 producers. And it was in 1998 that the ColleMassari winery was born , following the purchase of the Castle of the same name by the Tipa Bertarelli family.

Today the estate has a Resort and over 1,200 hectares of which 120 hectares of vineyards, 90 hectares of olive groves, 400 hectares of arable land and the remaining part made up of woodland. The estate is also surrounded by an area of approximately 600 hectares of state forests.

Current production numbers around 600 thousand bottles of wine obtained mainly from native varieties, among which Vermentino and Sangiovese stand out. Since its origins, it was born and remains the largest organic company in Europe. Even in the construction of the cellar, the criteria of bio-architecture were followed with the organization of winemaking on multiple levels in full respect of the wine, the environment and the territory.

The estate also has 22 rooms of various types. To complete the services of the structure, in addition to the swimming pool, there is a Tecnogym equipped fitness room , a beauty center with massage room and Turkish bath.

The property is the flagship of C ollemassari Hospitality , a complex that also includes 3 other accommodation facilities such as: Case Nuove (private villa), Pecora Vecchia (farmhouse), La Scuola (b&b), for a total of 54 rooms up to to 110 people.

The first vintage produced was 2003 and to date Colle Massari produces seven wines, three of which are red, two yellow, one rosé and one vin santo. We had the pleasure of tasting some of these labels and these are our impressions.

IRISSE MONTECUCCO VERMENTINO DOC 2021

Bottles produced: 13,000. Price €17.50

Grapes: 85% Vermentino, 15% Grechetto. An organic wine from 20-year-old vineyards located at approximately 300 meters above sea level with predominantly sandy soils. A unique blend of Vermentino and Grechetto, a variety originally from Umbria. After the harvest, the two grapes follow a different approach: the Vermentino is fermented in steel tanks followed by a 12-month refinement in 40 hl barrels; while the Grechetto is fermented and aged in wood. After a period of rest in the bottle, the wine is ready.

This Vermentino di Collemassari is a rich and complex yellow, a wine with enormous aging potential. Mediterranean aromas of broom, citrus and yellow fruit, followed by notes of honey and rosemary, ripe pears and melon combined with a pleasant minerality and persistence. Rich and elegant, it has a savory sip , with discreet articulation and good persistence.

It has a straw yellow color. The scent on the nose expresses summer notes of broom and Mediterranean spices, which progressively expand with aromas of Granny Smith apple, white peach and sweet limes, as well as a note of exotic fruit .

Upon entry to the palate it is fresh, fragrant, characterized by pleasant acidity and savory persistence. It makes you salivate for a long time, impeccable and intact. It amazed with its pleasantness and frankness, a certified organic wine with all the trimmings, without any flaws!

COLLEMASSARI MONTECUCCO ROSSO RISERVA DOC 2019

Bottles produced: 160,000. Price: €18.50.

Grape varieties : 80% Sangiovese, 10% Ciliegiolo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winemaking took place in steel and in small wooden vats with spontaneous fermentations and long macerations of 3-4 weeks. The wine was aged for 18 months in both new and second or third passage barrels and tonneaux and was bottled in July 2021.

Shiny ruby red. Sensations of violet, plum, black cherry and light blackcurrant, with mainly tertiary notes of coffee and toffee together with tobacco, a whiff of cherry in alcohol. In the background, notes of cedar wood and refined spices can be appreciated.

Despite its aromatic complexity, it is very refined and elegant, demonstrating its high quality. The tannins are present and perfectly accompanied by the robust structure. The sour cherry alternates with notes of roasting, with coffee and chocolate, on a balsamic finish supported by cedar wood and an oriental spiciness. Dry and well concentrated, rather muscular with a slightly bitter finish. It almost feels like biting into a whole fruit. A wine that lends itself to very long aging.

POGGIO LOMBRONE MONTECUCCO SANGIOVESE RISERVA DOCG 2017

Bottles produced: 10,000. Price: €30.00

Grape variety : 100% Sangiovese

Poggio Lombrone is the Sangiovese Cru from old Collemassari vineyards. The vineyards are organic , consequently the yield is reduced to only 40 quintals per hectare. The malolactic fermentation took place in 40 hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels where the refinement continued for 30 months. The wine was bottled on 9 July 2020.

Intense ruby red. Complex, clean, fine and enveloping: it expands with aromas of morello cherry and violet and continues with berries in syrup, black cherries, plums, black mulberry, juniper, a sweet spiciness, hints of orange peel and a refreshing breath of resin. Rich, full-bodied and well-balanced wine, which has preserved freshness and roundness. It shows an elegant taste, with compact and velvety tannins, structured and decidedly drinkable at the same time. Very long, it closes with a finish with hints of laurel and menthol which prolong the refined finish. A wine that lends itself to long aging.
