Baron Longo è una cantina storica a Egna, in provincia di Bolzano. L’azienda affonda le radici attorno al 1700, come testimonia l’antico edificio dove risiede la cantina, che circonda il pittoresco Schlößl (castello) di Villa a Egna, dove fino a 100 anni fa i Baron Longo producevano il loro vino. Nel 2015 Anton Baron Longo ha ripreso l'antica tradizione di famiglia. I vigneti si estendono intorno allo Schlößl di Villa, da 240 m s.l.m. fin quasi a Montagna (1040 m) per un totale di circa 20 ettari.
Le vigne, disposte in modo concentrico su un appezzamento di forma conica, riflettono un’immagine così forte e mozzafiato da essere utilizzate come emblema per la promozione del vino dell’Alto Adige nel mondo. Anche la casa padronale di Palais Longo, risalente al XVIII, appartiene alla famiglia da oltre 250 anni ed è l’edificio che ospita ancora oggi la cantina.
Il discendente più giovane della famiglia ritiene che la carta vincente sia un’identità naturale e forte, messa in risalto da suolo, clima mediterraneo e viticoltura biologica.
Un ciclo di produzione in gran parte chiuso, che utilizza nutrienti naturali e organismi benefici, rivitalizzando il terreno e utilizzando vitigni autoctoni tradizionali e varietà robuste adeguate al luogo, permette di conservare le risorse naturali, ridurre il consumo di acqua ed energia ed evitare le emissioni nocive causate dagli additivi chimici. Biotopi diversificati, una vegetazione ricca di specie e la protezione di animali selvatici favoriscono un’agricoltura rispettosa dell’ambiente e la conservazione di un paesaggio rurale diversificato, promosso anche dagli animali da fattoria che popolano la tenuta, sulla base del principio dell’autosufficienza.
Tutta la superficie è coltivata applicando le rigide linee-guida della produzione biologica - e non solo perché la parte più alta dei vigneti è inserita nel Parco Naturale Monte Corno. Sostenibilità e rifiuto di ogni compromesso non sono un caso e riflettono i valori di famiglia: coerenza, coraggio e lungimiranza. La trasmissione di tutte queste caratteristiche è anche ciò che viene richiesto in cantina, ospitata nella dimora storica di Palais Longo.
Le varietà più coltivate sono Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet e Merlot, perché Anton crede fortemente nella tradizione e nell’ambiente pedoclimatico unico e favorevole che offre il territorio. Discorso a parte invece per una particolare vigna situata a 1000 metri di altitudine sul livello del mare, dove Anton coltiva il Solaris, una varietà a bacca bianca PIWI (viti resistenti ai funghi). Grazie a questa peculiarità non sono necessari particolari interventi fitosanitari in vigna, favorendo dinamiche biologiche e sostenibili.
In questo contesto e con la filosofia poco interventista di Anton, le vendemmie manuali con selezione dei grappoli, sono ovviamente l’unica strada percorribile, unite a fermentazioni e affinamenti prevalentemente in legno.
Anche in cantina la parola d’ordine è quindi tipicità, presentando vini intensi e suggestivi, dal carisma fresco e minerale.
Noi abbiamo avuto il piacere di degustare alcuni di questi vini altoatesini blasonati e siamo rimasti colpiti positivamente, principalmente da quelli gialli che possiedono un carattere montano, di prati fioriti e aria tersa di campo.
FELIX ANTON IGT 2022
Felix Anton rende omaggio a Felix Anton Reichsritter von Longo, fondatore della tradizione vinicola di famiglia. Nel 1804, l'imperatore Francesco II lo onorò per i suoi successi durante le guerre napoleoniche conferendogli il grado di barone con il predicato "Liebenstein".
Questo vino è il risultato di una cuvée di Chardonnay e Pinot bianco che affina in serbatoi di acciaio inox e in botti di rovere francese. Sfoggia una luminosa veste giallo paglierino. Piacevoli profumi di fiori bianchi di campo e frutta delicata giungono all’olfatto. Felix Anton conquista il palato con il suo carattere vivace e il suo corpo armonioso. La struttura dello Chardonnay e l’aromaticità del Pinot Bianco, offrono un vino finemente strutturato ed equilibrato.
LIEBENSTEIN IGT 2020
Liebenstein è il secondo cognome della famiglia del barone Longo.
Il nome di questo vino significa (PIETRE D’AMORE). La fermentazione avviene spontaneamente, a temperatura controllata, in botti di legno tonneau e barrique per 12 mesi. Invecchiamento su lieviti integrali e degradazione biologica degli acidi su fecce fini. Successivamente breve maturazione in bottiglia. Il vino raggiunge una maturità armoniosa dopo un invecchiamento di quasi due anni, ma, in condizioni ideali, ha un potenziale di circa 10 anni.
Il Baron Longo Liebenstein è uno dei punti di riferimento della cantina altoatesina. Ottenuto anch’esso da un blend di Pinot Bianco e Chardonnay, sa offrire incredibili sfumature fruttate, minerali e sapide, che riflettono il terroir e la vinificazione tradizionale in legno.
Regala nel calice un vino giallo dorato tenue e dispiega profumi di frutta a polpa gialla matura e frutta esotica, mango e papaya su tutti, seguiti da leggere note minerali. Al palato la cuvée si mostra graziosa, elegante e particolarmente persistente. Il sorso si rivela agile, fruttato, fresco e sapido, ingentilito dall’apporto del legno che svela un vino bilanciato e non privo di personalità.
SCHLOSSEBERG IGT 2022 VIGNETI DELLE DOLOMITI PINOT BIANCO
Il Pinot Bianco di Baron Longo è la vera rivelazione di questa nostra degustazione. Racconta del territorio dell’Alto Adige e dei suoi migliori vigneti, dai suoli prevalentemente calcarei e ricchi di minerali. La vinificazione avviene totalmente in acciaio a temperatura controllata, per valorizzare al meglio le peculiarità del varietale, con le sue note fresche e fruttate, a cui si aggiunge la tipica mineralità data dal terroir.
Giallo paglierino tenue con nuance verdi, luminoso, consistente. Bouquet particolareggiato con sensazioni iniziali di ortica, acacia, fiori di campo, glicine che si allargano nei minuti successivi a note di agrumi, mandorla, mora di gelso, con incursioni finali di resina e incenso.
Garbato anche alla beva, è lungo, sapido e finisce su ricordi di erbe, menta in particolare e spezie dolci. Bella sapidità, equilibrio e mineralità. Succoso e affilato il sorso, con bella spinta sapida. Non mi stupirei se il vino migliorasse e di molto dopo cinque o sei anni di bottiglia.
HOHENSTEIN IGT 2021 GEWÜRZTRAMINER
"Hohenstein" allude a uno dei membri femminili della famiglia Hohenstein, nati dalla famiglia del barone Longo.
La provenienza del Gewürztraminer Hohenstein di Baron Longo ricade all'interno della provincia di Bolzano, da vigneti che si estendono da Egna sino alla città di Montagna.
La vinificazione si svolge tradizionale in bianco, con fermentazione a temperatura controllata. L'affinamento si svolge per un breve periodo in tonneaux di rovere francese.
Il colore è giallo dorato. Molto aromatico ma dotato di giusta freschezza, mette in evidenza subito sentori di rosa, gelsomino, mela, menta e note di frutta esotica e spezie che insieme inebriano l'olfatto.
Il gusto in bocca è fresco, equilibrato e sapido. Sorso scorrevole e dinamico tra freschezza, sapidità, eleganza ed un’impronta minerale che coniuga struttura e bevibilità. Il lunghissimo finale è su note floreali e speziate.
FRIEDBERG DOC 2022 LAGREIN
"Friedberg" allude a uno dei membri femminili della famiglia Friedberg, nati dalla famiglia del barone Longo.
Vinifica in barriques e tonneaux di rovere francese nuove, con un affinamento di 3 anni in bottiglia.
Rosso rubino intenso con riflessi granati. Al naso sviluppa lentamente sentori complessi e variegati che richiamano frutti di rovo, sottobosco, liquirizia, cioccolato fondente e note elegantissime di vaniglia e peonia avvolti da un manto di china.
Tratto gustativo rispondente, con equilibrio ricco di esuberanze fruttate e tannino ben pettinato. Succoso e ben equilibrato tra dolcezza, freschezza e tannini proporzionati. Sorso appagante e ricco, con ottima persistenza gustativa, dai ritorni fruttati. Una particolarità di questo Lagrein principesco è il bassissimo contenuto di zuccheri, oltre al tempo di maturazione in bottiglia estremamente generoso. Con meno di 1 g/l di zuccheri residui, è un vino estremamente secco, ma la sua struttura corposa e l'aroma vanigliato e fruttato in bocca lo rendono estremamente seducente.
WELLENBURG IGT 2020
Cuveé composta da 80% di Cabernet Sauvignon e 20% di Merlot provenienti da terreni calcarei.
Fermentazione spontanea in tonneaux aperti con affinamento in barrique.
Rosso rubino intenso. Sprigiona aromi floreali di ginepro e note di ribes rosso e nero, prugne e amarene con una sottile vena aromatica di vaniglia e di tostatura.
In bocca è fresco, lungo, speziato con tannini levigati e riverberi di pepe rosa. Nobiltà nei tannini, essenzialità minerale, eleganza che giocano un ruolo fondamentale per la sua maturità e longevità.

Baron Longo is a historic winery in Egna , in the province of Bolzano . The company has its roots back to around 1700 , as evidenced by the ancient building where the cellar is located, which surrounds the picturesque Schlößl (castle) of Villa a Egna, where until 100 years ago the Baron Longo family produced their wine. In 2015 Anton Baron Longo resumed the ancient family tradition. The vineyards extend around the Schlößl di Villa, from 240 m above sea level almost to Montagna (1040 m) for a total of approximately 20 hectares.
The vineyards, arranged concentrically on a cone-shaped plot, reflect an image so strong and breathtaking that they are used as an emblem for the promotion of Alto Adige wine in the world. The manor house of Palais Longo , dating back to the 18th century, has also belonged to the family for over 250 years and is the building that still houses the winery today.
The youngest descendant of the family believes that the trump card is a natural and strong identity, highlighted by soil, Mediterranean climate and organic viticulture.
A largely closed production cycle, which uses natural nutrients and beneficial organisms, revitalizing the soil and using traditional native vines and robust varieties adapted to the location, allows us to conserve natural resources, reduce water and energy consumption and avoid emissions harmful effects caused by chemical additives. Diversified biotopes, species-rich vegetation and the protection of wild animals favor environmentally friendly agriculture and the conservation of a diversified rural landscape, also promoted by the farm animals that populate the estate, based on the principle of self-sufficiency.
The entire surface is cultivated by applying the strict guidelines of organic production - and not only because the highest part of the vineyards is included in the Monte Corno Natural Park. Sustainability and refusal of any compromise are no coincidence and reflect family values: coherence, courage and foresight. The transmission of all these characteristics is also what is required in the cellar, housed in the historic residence of Palais Longo.
The most cultivated varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer , Cabernet and Merlot, because Anton strongly believes in tradition and in the unique and favorable soil and climate environment that the area offers. A separate discussion however for a particular vineyard located at 1000 meters above sea level, where Anton grows Solaris , a PIWI white grape variety (fungus-resistant vines). Thanks to this peculiarity, no particular phytosanitary interventions are necessary in the vineyard, favoring biological and sustainable dynamics.
In this context and with Anton's non-interventionist philosophy , manual harvests with selection of bunches are obviously the only viable option, combined with fermentations and refinements mainly in wood.
Even in the cellar the watchword is therefore typicality, presenting intense and evocative wines, with a fresh and mineral charisma.
We had the pleasure of tasting some of these renowned South Tyrolean wines and were positively impressed, mainly by the yellow ones which have a mountain character, of flowery meadows and clear field air.
FELIX ANTON IGT 2022
Felix Anton pays homage to Felix Anton Reichsritter von Longo, founder of the family winemaking tradition. In 1804, Emperor Francis II honored him for his successes during the Napoleonic Wars by awarding him the rank of baron with the predicate "Liebenstein".
This wine is the result of a cuvée of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc which ages in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. He sports a bright straw yellow robe. Pleasant aromas of white wild flowers and delicate fruit reach the nose. Felix Anton conquers the palate with his lively character and harmonious body. The structure of Chardonnay and the aromaticity of Pinot Blanc offer a finely structured and balanced wine.
LIEBENSTEIN IGT 2020
Liebenstein is the second surname of Baron Longo's family.
The name of this wine means (STONES OF LOVE) . Fermentation occurs spontaneously, at a controlled temperature, in tonneau and barrique wooden barrels for 12 months. Aging on whole yeasts and biological degradation of acids on fine lees. Subsequently brief maturation in the bottle. The wine reaches a harmonious maturity after aging for almost two years, but, under ideal conditions, has a potential of around 10 years.
Baron Longo Liebenstein is one of the points of reference of the South Tyrolean winery. Also obtained from a blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, it offers incredible fruity, mineral and savory nuances, which reflect the terroir and traditional vinification in wood.
It gives a pale golden yellow wine in the glass and unfolds aromas of ripe yellow pulp fruit and exotic fruit, mango and papaya above all, followed by light mineral notes. On the palate the cuvée is graceful, elegant and particularly persistent. The sip proves to be agile, fruity, fresh and savoury, softened by the contribution of wood which reveals a balanced wine not devoid of personality.
SCHLOSSEBERG IGT 2022 VINEYARDS OF THE DOLOMITES PINOT BIANCO
Baron Longo's Pinot Bianco is the true revelation of our tasting. It tells about the South Tyrolean territory and its best vineyards, with predominantly calcareous soils rich in minerals. The vinification takes place entirely in steel at a controlled temperature, to best enhance the peculiarities of the varietal, with its fresh and fruity notes, to which is added the typical minerality given by the terroir.
Pale straw yellow with green nuances, bright, consistent. Detailed bouquet with initial sensations of nettle, acacia, wild flowers, wisteria which broaden in the following minutes to notes of citrus, almond, mulberry, with final incursions of resin and incense.
Also pleasant to drink, it is long, tasty and ends with hints of herbs, mint in particular and sweet spices. Nice flavor, balance and minerality. The sip is juicy and sharp, with a nice savory boost. I wouldn't be surprised if the wine improved a lot after five or six years in the bottle.
HOHENSTEIN IGT 2021 GEWÜRZTRAMINER
"Hohenstein" alludes to one of the female members of the Hohenstein family, born to the family of Baron Longo.
The origin of Baron Longo's Gewürztraminer Hohenstein falls within the province of Bolzano, from vineyards that extend from Egna to the city of Montagna.
The vinification takes place traditionally in white, with fermentation at a controlled temperature. The aging takes place for a short period in French oak tonneaux.
The color is golden yellow. Very aromatic but with the right freshness, it immediately highlights hints of rose, jasmine, apple, mint and notes of exotic fruit and spices which together inebriate the sense of smell.
The taste in the mouth is fresh, balanced and savory. Smooth and dynamic sip between freshness, flavor, elegance and a mineral imprint that combines structure and drinkability. The very long finish is on floral and spicy notes.
FRIEDBERG DOC 2022 LAGREIN
"Friedberg" alludes to one of the female members of the Friedberg family, born to the family of Baron Longo.
It vinifies in new French oak barriques and tonneaux, with 3 years of aging in the bottle.
Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose it slowly develops complex and varied scents that recall blackberry fruits, undergrowth, liquorice, dark chocolate and very elegant notes of vanilla and peony wrapped in a cloak of cinchona.
Responsive taste trait, with a rich balance of fruity exuberance and well-combed tannin. Juicy and well balanced between sweetness, freshness and proportionate tannins. Satisfying and rich sip, with excellent tasting persistence, with fruity aftertaste. A peculiarity of this princely Lagrein is the very low sugar content, in addition to the extremely generous maturation time in the bottle. With less than 1 g/l of residual sugars, it is an extremely dry wine, but its full-bodied structure and vanilla and fruity aroma in the mouth make it extremely seductive.

Cuveé composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot from calcareous soils.
Spontaneous fermentation in open tonneaux with aging in barrique.
Intense ruby red. It releases floral aromas of juniper and notes of red and black currants, plums and black cherries with a subtle aromatic hint of vanilla and toasting.
In the mouth it is fresh, long, spicy with smooth tannins and reflections of pink pepper. Nobility in the tannins, mineral essentiality, elegance which play a fundamental role in its maturity and longevity.
